  GS00154 - THE DEVIL'S HAIRPIN - $8.99
Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, Arthur Franz, Mary Astor,
The Devil's Hairpin was one of the more exciting racing movies from the 50's. It is also a compelling story of a conflict between life and death. Cornel Wilde plays retired racecar champion Nick Jargin. Jargin owns a nightclub and lives on past glory, never missing an opportunity to boast that he could still beat anyone on the track. What his legion of fans don't know is that he is, in fact, afraid to race again. In his last race, he caused an accident, which severely injured his younger brother. He had a decision to make, letting his brother win or jeopardizing his brother's life by not letting him pass. He chose the latter, and although his brother doesn't blame him, he has always blamed himself. Most important, the film was filmed at Paramount Ranch near Malibu. They held only 5 races there, and then closed the track because of fatal crashes.

The third entry in John Waynes' Lone Star series, "The Lucky Texan" features John Wayne as Jerry Mason, a young college graduate who, along with old family friend Jake Benson (Gabby Hayes), locates a secret gold field.  Returning to town with their gold, the tow friends make the mistake of trusting the local assayer (Lloyd Whitlock) and his equally crooked partner (Yakima Canutt).  The villains take a shot at Jake and, believing they had killed the old coot, blame young Jerry for the "murder".  At his trial, Jerry is delighted to discover his "victim" among the spectators, dressed in a costume formerly used in a local presentation of "Charley's Aunt".  (1934 - 61 Minutes)
